The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's rugby team defeated the York Lions 62-5 in their home opener at Varsity Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 6) night.
The Blues got off to a fast start in the match and kept their foot on the gas pedal until the final whistle. In the first minute, fifth-year wing Jackey Kuang scored his first of two tries in the match. Third-year hooker Quinn Reynolds had a strong half as the Vancouver, B.C., native added another two tries to Toronto's total lifting the U of T first half lead to 17-0 after 40 minutes of play.
In the second half, U of T took control of the game as three minutes in, Kuang's second try of the game extended the advantage. York's Orlando Piazza was able to respond with the lone try for the visitors, getting the Lions on the board. However, the Blues weren't phased as they continued to storm their way past the try line. Third-year wing Peter Lin scored a pair of tries in the second half, while second-year back row Malcolm Austgarden, third-year second row Jasper Partridge and second-year centre Liam Marshall each added their names to the score sheet with a try of their own.
