University of Toronto Varsity Blues fencers took to the piste in Waterloo this past weekend to compete at the 2025 Ontario Shield.
Blues fencers captured three medals across the multi-disciplinary tournament. In the Division I Women's Epee, Lilla Mucsi captured gold and Anna Mucsi grabbed bronze. The dynamic duo met in the semifinals, with Lilla picking up a tightly contested 15-12 victory to advance to the event final. Lilla would then earn a 15-11 gold medal win over her opponent from Sword Player Fencing Academy, while Anna would split the bronze with her counterpart from Newmarket Fencing Club.
In the Division I Men's Epee category, Varsity Blue standout Mike Howard collected silver. After earning back-to-back 15-12 wins in the Round of 16 and the quarter-finals, Howard added a 15-13 semifinal victory to take his place in the gold medal match. The OUA all-star would then come up just short in a 15-10 defeat versus the No. 1 seed competitor from the Torono Fencing Club, finishing on the second step of the podium.
The U of T fencing team are set to officially open their OUA competition schedule in late October heading to Kingston on back-to-back weekends for the Queen's Open and RMC Team Invitational.
