RANGER SCORES OVERTIME WINNER IN UPSET WIN OVER WESTERN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team defeated the Western Mustangs 11-10 in overtime on Sunday (Sept. 14) night at Varsity Stadium.

Fourth-year midfielder Justin Ranger was the overtime hero for U of T. Ranger wrapped around the Mustangs net from the X area, firing a shot that made its way behind goalie Fischer Stolitz as the Blues pulled off the upset against the 2024 CUFLA champions.

Toronto played with intensity from the moment the game began. Third-year midfielder Jonah Murawsky got the game's opening goal as U of T and Western exchanged goals in a 2-2 first quarter. In the second quarter, first-year standout Zach Abu-Ali scored his second goal of the match. Meanwhile, second-year midfielder Alexander May scored his first of two goals in the game as the Blues took a 4-3 lead into halftime.

Western struck early in the second half but despite the push from the Mustangs, U of T remained composed. Third-year attack Daniel Clarke and third-year long stick midfielder Brenen Lavoie added their names to the scoresheet and Ranger scored his first goal of the night.

Western took the lead in the fourth quarter but in the late stages the Blues showed their determination to win the game while trailing by two goals. Abu-Ali scored his fourth goal of the game with more than five minutes remaining. In the late stages of the game, May tied the game at 10-10 to force overtime.

In overtime, Ranger's game-winning goal sent Varsity Stadium into a frenzy as the Montreal native was mauled by his teammates on the field in celebration.

Third-year Blues goalie Benjamin Rishikof was strong for U of T, making 24 saves in the victory.

The Blues next game is on Sunday (Sept. 21) afternoon when they take on the Guelph Gryphons in Guelph, Ont. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
