PLAYOFF PREVIEW: OUA MEN'S HOCKEY SEMIFINAL

Following a two-game sweep of the Windsor Lancers in the quarter-final round of the OUA playoffs, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team will face the OUA West top-seeded TMU Bold in a cross-town rivalry match-up, with the winner of the best-of-three series both earning a spot in the Queen's Cup and clinching a spot at the U SPORTS National Championships in Ottawa later this month.

After a 17-11-0 (W-L-OTL) regular season record and second-place finish in the OUA West standings, the high-scoring Blues were awarded a bye for the first round of the playoffs, advancing to their quarter-final showdown with the Lancers. Winning five of their final six regular season games, the Blues carried that momentum into the postseason and took down Windsor in two games by scores of 5-2 and 4-2, setting themselves up for their first semifinal appearance since 2007. With 15 goals scored across their last three games, U of T continue to showcase their dynamic offence which finished the regular season third in the OUA in total goals scored (101) and fifth in power play percentage (23.6%).

Billy Moskal led the Blues in scoring during the quarter-final series with two goals and five total points across the two games, including a four-point effort in Saturday's series clinching win. In 14 combined regular season and playoff games since the winter break, the fourth-year forward has scored 12 goals and added nine assists for 21 points, while the Blues have gone 11-3 in that stretch. Additionally, Nicholas Wong has also been productive with four points in the playoffs, while Owen Robinson and Aiden Reeves have recorded three each. Starting for the Blues in both games of the best-of-three series, Rayce Ramsay had an impressive quarter-final performance between the pipes, posting a .915 save percentage.

A 17-10-1 regular season saw the TMU Bold claim first-place over the Blues by just one point, also giving them a first-round bye, but with home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs. The regular season saw the Bold score by committee, as six players recorded 20 or more points, led by fourth-year forward Kevin Gursoy's 27. Kai Edmonds and Ryan Dugas split duties between the pipes, with Edmonds putting up a .912 save percentage and 2.68 goal against average in 19 starts, while Dugas won seven of his eight outings. TMU swept the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the quarter-finals, coming away with a 3-2 overtime win on Wednesday night, before closing out the series with a 3-0 shutout victory on home ice this past Saturday.

The Blues and the Bold met three times during the 2024-25 season, with the U of T winning two of the three match-ups. U of T came away victorious in their most recent match-up, a 4-2 win on Feb. 6 at Varsity Arena.

The OUA semifinal series will open at TMU where the Bold will host Game 1 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Wednesday, Mar. 5 at 6:15 p.m. The series will shift to Varsity Arena on Friday, Mar. 7 for a Game 2 showdown at 7 p.m., before heading back to TMU for a potential Game 3, if needed, on Sunday, Mar. 9 at 6:15 p.m. Tickets for Varsity Blues hockey home games are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, while all OUA hockey playoff games can be streamed online at oua.tv.
