BLUES DEFEAT EXCALIBUR IN STRAIGHT SETS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team swept the Trent Excalibur 3-0 in a commanding performance on Friday (Feb. 7) night at Goldring Centre. The Blues dominated for the majority of the game, securing the victory with set scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-9.

Toronto put on an offensive showcase with 35 kills and a .239 hitting percentage while Trent managed to register just 18 kills and a hitting percentage of -.071. The Blues defense was equally impressive, tallying 45 digs and nine total blocks which limited Trent's offense from gaining momentum throughout the match.

Julia Liu and Julia Murmann led the Blues offense as they each recorded nine kills, with Murmann adding seven digs and an ace to her tally. Liu topped U of T with 11 points, followed closely by Murmann and Olivia Zhu with ten each and Anna Gadomski with nine. Zhu added eight kills and five digs, with Gadomski contributing three aces and three blocks. Robin Melnick facilitated the attack with 30 assists and six digs, and added two service aces for good measure. Delaney Watson anchored the backcourt with seven digs as the libero.

Kathryn Beresford led the Excalibur with nine kills, while Natalie Fournier contributed four kills and three service aces. The Excalibur were unable to find offensive consistency against Toronto's defensive pressure, allowing U of T to come away with their ninth win of the season.

The Blues are back on home court for the final time this regular season when they host the Excalibur on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. at Goldring Centre for senior night. Tickets for Varsity Blues home games are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, while matches are also streamed on oua.tv.
