The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team traveled to York University on Saturday night (Feb 1), pulling away with an easy 81-58 victory over the Lions.
Â
The Blues opened their scoring with an Anthony Daudu slam-dunk, which set the tone for an aggressive offensive and strict defensive minded match-up that the Lions were unable to handle. The Blues crashed the boards beautifully, out-rebounding the Lions, including a 14-4 advantage on the offensive glass. York pushed back mid-way through the third quarter, outscoring Toronto 16-14, but their best efforts were unable to close the deficit on the Blues big lead.
Â
U of T was led by fourth-year point-guard Inaki Alvarez, who put up 19 points, seven assists, two blocks, three rebounds, one steal, and zero personal fouls in the impressive stat line for the night. All five Varsity Blues starters hit double-digits as fourth-year centre Lennart Weber notched 14 points, fourth-year forward Anthony Daudu added 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, fourth-year guard Quarry Whyne registered 11 points, and second-year wing Simeon Jeffers recorded a 12 point and 10 rebound double-double.
Â
For the Lions, Liam Reitschin put up a game-high 21 points, while Malakai Ayres-Olson added 17 points.
Up next, the Blues travel to face-off against the nationally ranked Lakehead Thunderwolves for back-to-back games on Friday (Feb. 7) and Saturday (Feb 8) with tip-off set for 8 p.m. on both nights. The game will be streamed via
