The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team traveled to the OUA Central division leader Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday (Feb. 7) night in the first game of the back-to-back, concluding with a final score of 69-82.
While the Blues opened strong in the first few minutes, the Thunderwolves came out blazing late in the first by crashing the offensive glass and providing themselves many excellent second-chance and transition offence opportunities. Lakehead shot extremely well from three-point range, shooting 39 percent to the Blues 23, which pushed the Thunderwolves lead to its largest of the night at 18. The Blues came back with a strong push of their own in the third quarter where they outscored Lakehead 24-19, closing the deficit to five, but the Thunderwolves managed to pull away with the win.
Second-year forward Simeon Jeffers shone bright for the Blues tonight, shooting 64.7 percent from the field while notching a strong 22 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Fourth-year guard Quarry Whyne put up a supporting 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, and one block, joined by fourth-year guard Inaki Alvarez with 17 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
