The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team defeated the McMaster Marauders in a 72-69 overtime thriller on Saturday (Nov. 8) night at Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House.
The Blues opened the first quarter strong, shooting 53 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from three. McMaster stayed aggressive, pushing back in the second as they outscored Toronto 12-9. The Blues came out of halftime unstoppable with another 50 per cent shooting quarter, yet the Marauders never wavered. Tied at the end of the fourth, Toronto captured the win through strong offensive rebounding and contributions from the bench– six points compared to McMaster's zero.
Leading the charge for the Blues was second-year guard Lia Barbieri, who notched a game and career high 24 points and seven rebounds, shooting 50 per cent from three (6-12). Adding a near double-double was fourth-year forward Janet Enge with 13 points and nine rebounds. Third-year guard Faith Joseph contributed 10 points and four rebounds, as well as the game-winning bucket.
McMaster was led by Sophia Urosevic with 20 points and two rebounds, as well as Tayler Scott, with a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.
