The No. 3 seed University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team 3-1 to the No. 6 seed Trinity Western Spartans in the quarter-finals at the 2025 U SPORTS women's soccer championship at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton, Ont., on Thursday (Nov. 6) night.
The Blues will take on the loser of No. 7 seed McMaster and No. 2 seed Montreal in the consolation semifinal at tomorrow (Nov. 7) afternoon at 1:30 p.m., at Ron Joyce Stadium.
"It's tough to take a loss, you come in with big visions that you're going to play to win something on Sunday," said Blues head coach Angelo Cavalluzzo.
Getting U of T off to a quick start was second-year midfielder Maddy Mah. After a throw in from fifth-year defender Hannah Chown the two sides fought for a loose ball. Mah won the battle, pouncing on the ball and giving the Blue and White a 1-0 lead. The Blues played a strong defensive game as the half progressed as Chown, Bryanna Campbell, Samantha Garvina and Lindsey Barwitzki were effective in pushing the ball up to the midfield. When balls got through, third-year goalkeeper Maria Godoy-Atrash was strong in goal, making some of the best of her eight saves in the match as U of T went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Trinity Western came out strong in the second half. In the 56
th minute Sophie Crowther scored the equalizer. As the two sides exchanged chances, Crowther struck again to put U of T behind 2-1. The Blues continued to fight with great scoring chances and coming within inches of tying the game. As Toronto continued to push for an equalizer, Luciana Andrews gave the Spartans a 3-1 lead. The Blues continued to push until the final whistle in a hard-fought match.
"We're still competing at the highest level and we want to make sure that we continue to show our best selves." said Cavalluzzo. "You have to be up for it and we're going to do it for the OUA to make sure we represent well and we do it for ourselves and our senior players as well. This is going to be the last couple of matches that they play so lets make sure they have a great send-off."
