The University of Toronto Varsity Blues Women's basketball team fell score to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon at Goldring Centre Kimel Family Fieldhouse.
The Gryphons came out strong in the first half on both sides of the court. Outscoring the Blues 48-24, Guelph totalled 10 steals and three blocks over the first two quarters of action. The Blues fought back in the fourth quarter, but ultimately the Gryphons pulled away with the win.
 
The Blues were led by second-year guard Lia Barbieri with a near double-double, scoring 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Third-year guard Patrycja Waleszczak notched eight points and six rebounds, with second-year centre Zi Yang Wang also grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds.
 
Alexis Wright and Maddy Weber led Guelph with 14 points, six rebounds, and four steals, and 13 points and three steals, respectively.
 
The Blues will be back in action on Thursday (Oct. 9) afternoon when they take on the Laval Rouge et Or in Sherbrooke, Que. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
