BLUES PUSH BACK IN FOURTH QUARTER AGAINST GUELPH

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell 91-83 to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon at Goldring Centre Kimel Family Fieldhouse.

U of T shot 28.6 per cent from the field early, allowing for Guelph to pull ahead by 11 points, shooting 72.2 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from behind the three-point line leading 32-21 after the first quarter. The Blues narrowed the gap in the second quarter shooting 50 per cent from the field and grabbing more rebound's than the Gryphons. At halftime the Blues trailed 54-40. A second half offensive surge saw Toronto outscore the Gryphons 24-9 in the fourth quarter as their field goal percentage continued to improve. After four quarters of play, the Blues grabbed more rebounds than Guelph (46-31) and had two blocks on the defensive side of the court.

Second-year centre Lucas Prekovic was a standout for the Blues, leading the way offensively with 15 points while notching eight rebounds. Meanwhile, fourth-year centre Nigel Hylton grabbed a game high nine rebounds and scored 13 points. Second-year guard Rohan Scott-Smith and fourth-year forward Ryan Rudnick each had a block.

Raef Wykes was Guelph's top scorer with a game-high 16 points and Jack Tunstill and Emmanuel Black also scored double-digit points.

The Blues are back in action on Thursday (Oct. 9) when they take on the Laval Rouge et Or in Sherbrooke, Que. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
