The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team earned their first win of the new season defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-1 in Ottawa on Saturday (Oct. 25) afternoon.
Set scores in the match were 25-18, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23.
Rebounding from a loss versus the Gee-Gees the night before, U of T were able to excel in the second game of their season thanks a depth of offensive options, exceptional service delivery and better serve receive defence.
A trio of Blues reached double-digit points in the four set victory led by a game-high 18 from second-year outside hitter Julia Liu. Delivering several strong swings, Liu tallied 13 kills and an impressive five service aces. Right behind her was fourth-year Blues veteran Olivia Zhu with 16 kills and one ace, and third-year outside hitter Giulia Chimilovski with seven kills and three aces.
First-year setter Marina Gustke paced the Blues offence 28 assists, continuing to find her rhythm in her debut season. Defensively, third-year libero Delaney Armstrong registered a game-high 15 digs to help stifle the Gee-Gees attack.
Audrey Odigie led the Gee-Gees with 18 points from 16 kills, one ace and one solo block.
Remaining on the road for another week, the Blues will be slightly closer to home challenging the York Lions in back-to-back contests on Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8. Both days will see first serve at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on
