The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team earned their first win of the season defeating the McMaster Marauders in overtime 73-72 on Saturday (Oct. 25) night.
The road win in Hamilton marked the first victory for the Blues over the Marauders since November 2019. Delivering a dramatic finish to the overtime contest it was second-year guard Diana Comsa who came away with a buzzer-beating dagger for the Blues. Down by two points with only seconds remaining on the clock, second-year centre Zi Wang grabbed a critical rebound from a missed Marauders free throw. With no timeouts remaining, Wang quickly sent a pass to second-year guard Lia Barbieri who raced down the court. Finding Comsa in the corner it was a step back three-pointer over the outstretched arms of the Marauders defence that went flush through the McMaster net, sealing a one-point victory for the visiting Blues.
For the trio involved in the final sequence, Comsa finished the night with 15 points, including three made three-pointers. A workhorse for the Blues, Barbieri totaled 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals in a game-high 41 minutes. And a critical piece to Toronto's defensive effort being tasked with shutting down to strong interior offence of the Marauders, Wang grabbed 12 rebounds and produced two steals versus the strength of McMaster inside. Also to be noted in the Blues success, fourth-year forward Janet Enge recorded a game and team-high 20 points along with 11 rebounds for a double-double.
McMaster was paced by Grace Ammendolia who tied the game-high with 20 points including a clutch and-one of her own late in the fourth quarter to push the contest into overtime. As for in the paint for the Marauders, Tayler Scott registered a double-double of her own with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Following two impressive showings across opening weekend of the OUA regular season, U of T will look to take advantage of home court as they begin a four-game homestand next Saturday, Nov. 1 facing the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
