The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team dropped a 73-61 decision versus the visiting Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday (Nov. 1) afternoon inside the Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House.
In a close back-and-forth contest, it was a tale of two different offensive styles. U of T dominated in the paint outrebounding the Thunderwolves on the offensive glass 18-9 and outscoring the visitors 32-16 in the paint. This consistent offensive output allowed Toronto to keep pace throughout the home opener. In stark contrast however, the visitors from Thunder Bay utilized an onslaught of long-distance shots. Relying on their perimeter shooting, which saw them nail 15-of-34 three-pointers, Lakehead was able to close an early gap and maintain the lead down the stretch.
Recording the first 20-point game of her Varsity Blues career, second-year guard Diana Comsa finished with a team-high 22 while also adding seven rebounds, two steals and one block. Also reaching double-digits in the home opener, second-year guard Lia Barbieri tallied 11 points to go along with six rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block.
For Lakehead, eight different players made a three-point field goal, led by a 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc from Allison Read.
