The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team fell in straight sets in their OUA regular season opener versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday (Oct. 24) night.
Set scores in the road contest were 25-27, 15-25, 23-25.
To start the match, Toronto maintained much of the early momentum carrying a lead throughout the first set. However, the Gee-Gees were able to rebound with several strong service runs late to take the opening set in extra points. U of T tried to take back momentum from the home side, including with some stellar blocks at the net. The Blues would tally six energy sapping solo blocks through the three sets. Ottawa was relentless though capitalizing on Toronto errors utilizing 14 total service aces to help secure a win in front of their home crowd.
Second-year outside hitter Julia Liu led the way for the Blues with 13 total points from 11 kills, one ace and one solo block. The Blues standout was effective from the outside registering a .381 kill percentage. Third-year outside hitter Giulia Chimilovski added nine kills, while fourth-year outside hitter Olivia Zhu recorded seven.
Defensively, both Zhu and third-year libero tallied five digs apiece, while second-year middle Marie Boulerice was strong at the net with three solo blocks.
Ottawa was paced by 12 points from Keely Lloyd who finished with six kills, three aces and three solo blocks. Both Audrey Odgie and Camryn Giddens also reached double-digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Toronto will have another shot at the Gee-Gees tomorrow (Oct. 25) afternoon. First serve in Ottawa is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on
