MEN'S SOCCER SECURE FIRST ROUND BYE WITH ROAD WIN AT LAURENTIAN

The No. 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team earned a 4-0 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday (Oct. 11) in Sudbury.

With the win, the Blues improve to 9-1-1 (W-L-T) on the season. The record secures both the top spot in the OUA East division and a first round playoff bye for U of T.

On the pitch, Toronto claimed their second straight win over Laurentian in a home-and-home series which saw the Blues outscore the Voyageurs 7-0. The four goals on Saturday came courtesy Andrea Schifano, Niklas Hallam, Jordan Grey, and an own goal charged against the home side.

For U of T, it took just three minutes to find the first goal of the game. From a perfectly placed cross courtesy fifth-year defencer Anthony White, it was Schifano delivering a header past the outstretched arms of the Laurentian keeper to open the scoring. The goal marked the third of the season for Schifano.

Shifting to the second half, Hallam secured his eighth goal of the season in the 49th minute. Leading the team in goals for a second consecutive season, Hallam also now sits in a tie for third in the OUA for goals. Grey rounded out the goal scoring for Toronto in the 57th minute, registering his fifth of the season.

Second-year goalkeeper Filip Zendelek earned the clean sheet win making three saves through the 90 minutes of action for the Blues.

Toronto will conclude their regular season in North Bay tomorrow (Oct. 12). Kick-off between the Blues and Nipissing Lakers is scheduled for 2:15 p.m., with the game streamed live on oua.tv.
