YAN HATTRICK LEADS BLUES IN HOME OPENER VICTORY

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 9-7 in their 2024 home and season opener on Sunday, September 8 at Varsity Stadium.

The win marks Kylie Robinson's first career victory in his first game as head coach of the Varsity Blues.

The Blues were trailing 1-0 after the first quarter but Kevin Yan scored his first of a game-high three goals to get U of T on the board. Christopher McWatt tallied his first of the season eight minutes later, but Laurier evened the score just before the first half expired to leave the two teams deadlocked at 2-2 at halftime.

Toronto and Laurier went back-and-forth throughout the third quarter, with Jonathan Murawsky giving the Blues a 5-4 lead with just one second remaining in the frame.

Murawsky scored again early in the fourth quarter to give the Blues the lead for good. The two teams exchanged goals from there, but Justin Ranger secured the victory for the Blues with two goals in the last five minutes.

Christopher Williams made 15 saves in net for the Blues.

Toronto is back in action next Saturday, September 14 when they head to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
