WOMEN'S SOCCER BACK IN WIN COLUMN WITH SHUTOUT

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on September 7, 2024 at Varsity Stadium. The win marked Toronto's second of the season, improving their record to 2-1-0, while Ontario Tech dropped to 0-3-0.

Toronto took an early lead when Julia Cochrane scored the game's first goal in the 6th minute, finding the back of the net from twenty-five yards out. The Varsity Blues maintained pressure throughout the match, recording 16 shots, nine of which were on target. Ontario Tech goalkeeper Alicia Chisholm made several key saves to keep her team in the game, finishing with seven saves overall.

Despite Ontario Tech's attempts to equalize, Toronto's defense stood stall, anchored by goalkeeper Maria Godoy-Atrash. Godoy-Atrash matched Chisholm's effort with seven saves of her own, preventing Ontario Tech from finding the back of the net despite their 10 shots.

Toronto doubled their lead in the 70th minute when Emilija Lucic scored on a chip shot off the crossbar, assisted by Naomi Atem. Lucic was a standout performer with five shots on goal.

Disciplinary issues plagued Ontario Tech, as they accumulated 14 fouls and received three yellow cards throughout the match. Toronto also saw a player booked, with Bryanna Campbell receiving a yellow card in the 78th minute.

The Varsity Blues dominated offensively, especially in the second half, where they outshot Ontario Tech 10-5 and secured the win with their organized play and strong defence.

Toronto returns to the pitch next weekend on Saturday, September 14, as they travel to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
