The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the No.2 University of Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Gee-Gees Field in Ottawa.
After a scoreless first half, the Varsity Blues broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when forward Hannah Harkin found the back of the net, scoring her first goal of the season. The goal came from a well-placed free kick taken by second-year defender Samantha Gravina after a persistent push from the Blues' offensive unit.
The Gee-Gees, who entered the game undefeated, applied significant pressure, particularly in the second half, out shooting Toronto 10-7. However, Blues goalkeeper Maria Godoy Atrash was in top form, making four crucial saves to secure the clean sheet. A standout moment came in the 88th minute when defender Hannah Anderson made a key defensive save to preserve the Blues' lead.
Toronto held firm despite several late opportunities for Ottawa, including a header from Jenna Matsukubo that was saved by Godoy Atrash in the final moments.
With the win, Toronto improves to 3-2-1 on the season, while Ottawa suffers their first loss, dropping to 5-1-0.
The Blues will look to carry this momentum into their next match vs. the Carleton Ravens on September 29th at Varsity Stadium. Kick off is at 1 p.m. and tickets are available at
