TORONTO FALLS IN HOME OPENER VERSUS GUELPH

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team faced a tough opponent in the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday (Sept. 1) evening at Varsity Stadium, falling 47-10 in a challenging home opener.

The Gryphons took an early lead in the first quarter, scoring 22 points, including two touchdown passes from Tristan Aboud to Jakob Tomas and a 27-yard touchdown run by Caleb Sargeant. However, Toronto responded in the second quarter with a 44-yard touchdown run by Jake Oseen off a deceptive reverse. Oseen was a bright spot for the Blues, finishing the night with three carries for 61 yards and four catches for 47 yards. Toronto would enter the halftime break trailing 23-7.

In the third quarter, a Joshua Carter 43-yard interception return would lead to a Sam Henke field goal, bringing the score to 23-10, but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback. Guelph continued to find success on the ground, adding a field goal and three more touchdowns in the second half to seal the road victory.

On offence, the Varsity Blues managed 254 total yards but were hindered by penalties and field position. Meanwhile, the Blues defence showed moments of resilience, including another interception from Devon Crenshaw, a sack from Ryan Collins, and four tackles for loss.

Toronto moves to a 1-1 record and will look to bounce back on the road as they travel to challenge the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton next Saturday (Sept. 7). Kick-off for the road game is set for 7 p.m., with all the action available online via oua.tv.
