Opening competition in Montreal on Friday (Aug. 9) versus Laval, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's tennis team fell 5-2 in their semifinal contest at the Canadian University Tennis Championships.
The Blues were in tough against the Quebec conference champions, dropping all three of the match opening doubles bouts to concede the first point in the best-of-seven format.
After delivering Toronto's best result in the doubles contests, falling by a short 8-5 margin in the No. 2 doubles slot, both Noelle Vanasse Wilbert and Felina Yang battled to three set singles wins for U of T. However, the pair would be the only ones to secure victory in the national semifinal.
With the loss, the Blues will next face Dalhousie in the bronze medal match. The Tigers fell 7-0 in their semifinal versus Alberta, relegating them to the bronze medal match as well. The battle for the third step on the podium wil begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday (Aug. 11) morning, providing both teams with an opportunity to rest and recover ahead of the medal match in Montreal.
