The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 80-71 on Saturday (Feb. 3) at the Golding Centre Kimel Family Field House.
As the Blues celebrated fourth-year Sabrina Nero's graduation with their last home game of the season, Ellen Ougrinov scored her 1000th career point. Scoring 32 points on the night, Ougrinov also set a career-high in single game points.
In the first half, the Blues and Lakers were neck and neck, switching leads seemingly every minute. Shooting 100% from the free through line, Toronto fought to a 47-42 lead by the half. Despite the Lakers best efforts, the Blues looked dominant after the half securing the win with a final score of 80-71.
Leading the way for the Blues was Ougrinov. On top of her 32 points, the Mississauga, Ont. recorded seven rebounds and three assists. In what could be her final home game as a Blue, Sabrina Nero recorded a career-high 20 points and added five blocks. Under the basket, Thuraya Abdul-Hamid secured a team-high eight rebounds.
Sophie Milner led the Lakers with a game-high 37 points, in addition to 11 rebounds and two assists.
Up next, Toronto hits the road to Ottawa on Friday, February 9 to face off against the Carleton Ravens. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. The action will be streamed online at oua.tv
