The Varsity Blues women's fencing team recorded two second-place finishes on Day 1 of the 2024 OUA Women's Fencing Championship on Saturday (Feb. 10) at the Athletic Centre.
The Western Mustangs lead the women's standings with 195 points, followed by the Blues (110) and the Queen's Gaels (44).
In the foil competition, second-year standout Catherine Wu went a perfect 8-0 to reach the final, before dropping a narrow 15-11 decision to Erika Dominguez of TMU. Teammate Zoey Xie placed sixth overall in the competition.
Janna Elshakankiri picked up the Blues second silver medal of the day in the individual sabre competition. The third-year veteran was a perfect 9-0 on her way to the final, before falling in an intense 15-14 match with Western's Ariana Tang.Â
The Blues had three top 10 finishers in the epee category, with Angela Musci finishing in sixth, while Amy Sun and Anna Musci finished in seventh and 10
th, respectively.Â
The championship continues with the foil, epee and sabre team relay tomorrow at 9 a.m., at the Athletic Centre.
