The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 79-48 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday (Feb. 10) afternoon in the nation's capital.
Competing in their second game in under 24 hours in Ottawa, the Blues found it tough to keep pace with the home side Gee-Gees. While Toronto was able to limit the outside shooting of Ottawa holding them under 30 percent from beyond the arc, the Blues struggled to maintain possession as they were forced into 26 turnovers throughout the four quarters. The Gee-Gees capitalized on the extra opportunities outscoring U of T 25-6 in points off turnovers.
The duo of fifth-year guard Ellen Ougrinov and third-year forward Sabrina Nero led the charge for the Blues, each tallying a team-high 14 points in the Saturday matchup. Nero added eight rebounds and a block, while Ougrinov pulled down five rebounds, two assists, and two steals defensively. Thuraya Abdul Hamid and Kaylee Williams added seven and six points for the Blues, respectively.
All five starters for the Gee-Gees reached double-digit points in the win, led by a game-high 16 points from Emily Payne.
Toronto conclude their regular season schedule with another two-game road trip next weekend, heading to Waterloo to face the Warriors and Golden Hawks. Tip-off for the first match versus Laurier is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. The game will be available to stream online at
