MCKEOWN SCORES OVERTIME WINNER AS BLUES DEFEAT NO. 4 WARRIORS

Box Score

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the No. 4 nationally ranked Waterloo Warriors 2-1 in overtime at Varsity Arena on Saturday (Nov. 30) night.

Fourth-year forward Aili McKeown was the overtime hero for U of T, scoring her seventh goal of the season to win the game for the Blues.

The Blues got off to a hot start in the game, earning a 1-0 lead 69 seconds into the first period. With traffic in front of the Warriors goal after they failed to clear the puck, third-year defender Madison Tiro's shot found its way to the back of the net. The goal marked Tiro's first in the OUA and with an 11-4 shot advantage U of T had a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

In the second period, the Warriors were able to close the gap in shots as Toronto exited the ice outshooting the Warriors 19-17 but strong play from first-year Blues goaltender Lyla McKinnon along with strong defensive play kept Toronto ahead 1-0 after 40 minutes of play.

Waterloo evened the scoring in the third period as forward Keiara Raitt tied the game at 1-1 early in the frame. The Blues and Warriors traded chances as the third period progressed but McKinnon and Warriors netminder Kara Mark kept the game deadlocked at 1-1 to force overtime.

With one minute and 44 seconds remaining in overtime the Blues got an offensive chance as third-year forward Kaitlyn McKnight passed the puck to McKeown in the middle of the offensive zone and the Etobicoke, Ont., native fired a shot past Mark and into the back of the net to secure a 2-1 win for the Blues over the No. 4 ranked Warriors.

The Blues will return to the ice in 2025 when they take on the Western Mustangs on Friday (Jan. 10) night in London, Ont. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv
