The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team blanked the Waterloo Warriors with a 3-0 shutout on Saturday (Oct. 17) night at Varsity Arena.
Second-year goalie Jillian Matthews earned her first career OUA shutout, stopping the 20 shots she faced as U of T improves to 2-0 on the season.
Following a scoreless opening frame between two OUA rivals, the Blues broke through with two goals at lightning speed midway through the second period. Fourth-year forward Abby Whitworth delivered a no-look backhand pass right to the stick of third-year linemate Jasmine Comeau who fired home her first goal of the season. 29 seconds later, second-year forward Petra Klimes capitalized on a scramble in front of the net, beating goaltender Kara Mark off a rebound. Whitworth picked up her second assist of the game on the goal while fourth-year forward Christina Alexiou also drew a helper.
In the third period, Matthews turned aside eight shots while Toronto played a structured defensive game while still pushing for an insurance marker. Klimes delivered again late in the period, scoring an empty net goal with less than three minutes left on the clock for her first multi-goal game in the OUA.
The Blues will now make the trip southbound in downtown Toronto when they take on the TMU Bold at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Friday (Oct. 23) morning. Puck drop is scheduled for 11:15 a.m., and the game will be streamed live on
