CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: NCWP MEN'S WATER POLO

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's water polo team head to Kingston, Ont., this weekend to compete in the National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) Championships, hosted by Queen's University.

Last fall, the Blues captured their seventh consecutive provincial title, concluding OUA conference play as 36-time champions. This season, U of T will be competing for a new banner as they now compete under the NCWP conference.

Defensively, Toronto is once again led by standout goalie Miguel Garcia Alonso. Garcia Alonso has been a member of the Blues championship squads in each of the last two seasons, earning OUA Most Valuable Goalie during both campaigns. He is assisted by the duo of fourth-year defender Camilo Cortes and third-year defender Aidan Principe, who share the responsibility of shutting down opponent attacks.

Meanwhile on the offensive end of the pool, U of T is never short of firepower, having scored 280 goals through 20 games so far this fall, averaging 14 goals per game. Leading the charge and taking a step up has been second-year attacker Omer Sayli. During the Blues fall trip south of the border to challenge tough NCAA opponents, Sayli tallied 13 goals across the squads four games in West Virginia, including an impressive five goal performance versus Long Island University.

Additionally, Blues veterans James Glaser, Cameron Hexter, and Rhys Carr have continued to showcase themselves as difference-makers offensively.

The Blues will begin their campaign for a 37th provincial championship in program history on Friday, Nov. 29 with an opening round matchup versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The ball drops into the pool as of 7:15 p.m.
