The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 91-57 to the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday (Jan. 4) evening at the Goldring Centre Kimel Family Field House.
Starting out the new year on a strong note, the Blues were able to hold a two-point lead after the first quarter. Throughout the majority of the game, Toronto was able to show some strong defence inside the paint tallying a game-high four blocks. However in the second quarter, Guelph scored 27 points putting them in the lead, where they would stay for the remainder of the game.
Leading the Blues on the night was fifth-year guard Ellen Ougrinov, who scored a game-high 21 points, along with eight rebounds and two assists in 38 minutes of play. In the paint, Sabrina Nero secured the Blues eight rebounds and was 75 per cent from behind the free throw line.
Julia Colavecchia recorded a team-high 20 points for the Gryphons, while also adding nine rebounds and four assists in the win.
Up next, the Blues face off against the Brock Badgers on Saturday, Jan. 6 to wrap up their two-game home stand at the Goldring Centre for High Performance to begin 2024.
