THINK PINK WIN FOR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team won 71-54 against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Wednesday (Jan. 17) evening at the Golding Centre Kimel Family Field House.

In support of U SPORTS 17th annual 'Shoot for the Cure' campaign, the women's team sported limited-edition 'Think Pink' jerseys. Visit usports.ca to join the battle against breast cancer.

Despite a slow start on the court for both teams, Toronto's defence proved to be the difference early holding the Ridgebacks to only two made field goals through the first quarter and a half of action. By the three-minute mark, the Blues established a lead which they held from then-on. The Blues persistent defence was also on display on the boards as they grabbed nearly 20 more rebounds throughout the night, including 42 defensive rebounds limiting Ridgebacks second chance points.

Leading the Blues to victory was fourth-year veteran Ellen Ougrinov who finished with 27 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. This marked her ninth game scoring over 20 points this season. Third-year forward Sabrina Nero also secured her seventh double-double of the season adding 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Blues. A big part of U of T's strong defensive performance, third-year guard Gabrielle Reed pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, while also notching two steals, two blocks, and eight points.

For the Ridgebacks, Allie Dunnett scored a team-high 14 points in 24 minutes of action, including four made three-pointers.

Up next, the Blues are back at the Goldring Centre this weekend to face off against the No. 4 nationally ranked Queen's Gaels on Saturday (Jan. 20) night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets for Blues home games are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, while action is also streamed online at oua.tv.
