The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team defeated the Trent Excalibur 3-1 on Sunday (Sept. 24) afternoon at the Varsity Stadium.
Â
Scoring opened at the 27th minute when Russell Stewart kicked the ball past Trent Excalibur goalkeeper Justin Kramer, after receiving a pin-point pass from Andrea Schifano.
Just a few minutes later though, Trent's Leo Frans evened out the match 1-1.
Â
Scoring went through a temporary lull into the second half, until Stewart scored his second goal of the match in the 62nd minute, securing the lead for Toronto.
Even with all the offensive action of the Varsity Blues this match, the defence did not falter. U of T did a remarkable job of consistently overloading Trent's attack line, protecting the Blues goal from any future shots taken by the Excalibur.
Â
Michael Maslanka marked the match with the final goal of the day in the 82nd minute. Astonishing everyone around, Maslanka met Stewart's pass with a bicycle kick that surpassed the reach of the Trent goalkeeper, granting the Blues their 3-1 win.
Â
Toronto will return to the pitch on Thursday, September 28 at 2 p.m. to battle Ontario Tech, traveling to Oshawa for the mid-afternoon match.
