The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell to the Waterloo Warriors 59-48 in their first exhibition game on Friday (Sept. 22) night at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
The Blues came out flying in the first quarter, taking a commanding 13-2 lead to start the quarter and finished with a 19-8 lead. In the second quarter, the Blues continued to hold momentum, holding a strong 28-18 lead at the half, before leading 45-35 at the half. Despite the Blues best efforts, the Warriors continued to cut into U of T's lead and would go on to win the game 59-48.
Veteran guard Ellen Ougrinov led the way for the Blues, closing out the night with a team-high 16 points, four assists and a game-high three steals. Helping out under the basket, third-year forward Sabrina Nero picked up eight rebounds, including five defensive rebounds. Nero also led the game with four blocks.
The Varsity Blues hit the road to Montreal, Que. to participate in the Concordia Classic Tournament from Friday, October 6 to Sunday, October 8.
