BLUES FALL TO COUGARS IN U SPORTS QUARTER-FINAL

Box Score The No. 1 seeded University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell to the No. 8 Mount Royal Cougars 3-2 in quarter-final action at the 2023 U SPORTS championship on Thursday afternoon in Montreal.

With the loss, the Blues will take on the loser of the No. 4 University of New Brunswick Reds and No. 5 Montreal Carabins in a consolation semifinal on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. EST.

WHAT HAPPENED:

In a period where the Blues spent the majority of their time on offence, it was the Cougars who would strike first. With just 48.7 seconds left in the first period, Mount Royal forward Courtney Kollman opened the scoring for the Cougars.

However, their lead would not last through the second period as Caroline Eagles quickly got the Blues on the board. The fourth-year defenceman buried a deflection off of Juliette Blais-Savoie skate to tie things up for the Blues.

With the momentum now swung in the Blues favour, it was second-year defenceman Emma Potter who would make the difference for Toronto. The Agnus, Ont., native made the most of captain Taylor Trussler's centering pass to pull the Blues into the lead.

The Cougars responded midway through the third period as Jori Hansen-Young scored to even things up and then once again through Breanne Trotter to take a 3-2 lead. The Cougars would see out this lead to secure their place in the U SPORTS semifinal

Fourth-year Blues netminder Erica Fryer made 16 saves in the loss.
