The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team downed the McMaster Marauder 66-51 on Friday (Feb. 10) night at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport.
With the win, the Blues hold their third place in the OUA Central division.
TORONTO STATS: Third-year standout Callum Baker once again led all players with 19 points. The Oakville, Ont. native also added six rebounds and two assists.
Veteran guard Inaki Alvarez tallied 19 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Former McMaster Marauder, Tomi Johnson, scored a career-high 12 points for the Blues. The commerce major added five rebounds, an assist and a steal in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After coming out to 19-12 Toronto lead, the Blues and Marauders battled to a 20-20 tie in the first quarter.
With a major offensive effort from Johnson in the second quarter, the Blues were able to regain their early first-quarter momentum. Johnson's nine-point quarter propelled the Blues to a 34-23 lead at the half.
The Blues dominated the third quarter thanks to a strong defensive performance. The Blues held the Marauders to just two points through the opening half of the quarter. Despite a late McMaster surge, the Blues were able to extend their lead to 15 by the end of the third (53-35).
Holding that lead throughout the fourth quarter, the Blues ultimately won the game 66-51.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues are back on the court tomorrow Saturday, February 11 when they face off against the Waterloo Warriors at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
