The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team won a Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon battle 2-1 against the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs at the Varsity Stadium.
With a slow start to the game, the teams challenged each other through skillful dribbling and several shot attempts. Andrea Schifano then broke the stalemate in favour of the Blues in the 34
th minute receiving a crisp pass from Daniel Cavalluzzo before delivering a running kick into the bottom-left corner of the goal.
However, just before halftime the Voyageurs Jaiden Santo evened out the scoreboard 1-1 to put the pressure back on the home side in the crucial late season contest.
Toronto proved frustrating for Laurentian early in the second half as U of T's consistent attack resulted in three second half yellow cards for the Voyageurs. Then Schifano secured the home turf win for Toronto with his fourth goal of the season, coming off a Bruno Sullivan assist. Schifano finished the match with two goals on four shots on goal.
Blues goalkeeper Maxwell Campeau finished the afternoon contest with five saves.
U of T will return to the pitch to battle Nipissing University on Saturday, October 14 at 2:15 p.m. at North Bay.
