BLUES WOMEN DOMINANT ON DAY 1 OF CHAMPIONSHIP

Competing in an OUA quarter-final matchup on the opening day of the 2023 OUA Tennis Championships, the Varsity Blues women's tennis team delivered a dominant 7-0 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday evening.

Serving as host for the provincial championship at Mayfair Toronto East, U of T entered the quarter-final showdown as the No. 2 ranked team in the tournament. Toronto showcased that ranking, sweeping the No. 7 seeded Gee-Gees in across both doubles and singles matches on Friday.

Beginning with doubles contests, the Blues top duo of Anastasiya Dyadchenko and Maria Popova made quick work of their Ottawa opponents, claiming an 8-2 victory. The pair of Carmen Nahat and Jana Al-Khatib followed up with an 8-4 victory, while the Blues third pairing of Kristin Matthews and Linda Lee battled to an exciting 8-7 win over Ottawa to secure the doubles sweep.

Shifting to singles play, Dyadchenko (6-3, 6-0) and Popova (6-1, 6-2) added to their impressive Day 1 performances with convincing singles wins. Toronto then utilized a quartet of players in Noelle Vanesse Wilbert (6-1, 6-2), Felina Yang (6-3, 6-4), Mia Wong (6-1, 6-1), and Janet Pham (6-0, 6-1) to finish off the quarter-final sweep.

With the victory, U of T advance to the Day 2 semifinal round, matching up with the No. 3 seeded McMaster Marauders. First serve for the Blues in the Saturday matchup is scheduled for 3 p.m. at MayFair Toronto East.
