VARSITY BLUES TRIUMPH IN HOME OPENER

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team conquered the Western Mustangs 4-1 on Friday (Oct. 6) night at Varsity Arena for their 2023 OUA home opener.

The first period witnessed a dominant performance by the Blues, with second-year forward Jacob King putting the puck past the opposing goaltender just seven minutes after puck drop.

In under two minutes of the second frame, third-year forward Owen Robinson scored the Blues second goal of the match off a beautiful cross-ice pass from veteran Cole Purboo, extending their lead. However, the Mustangs scored their first and only goal of the night a few moments later.

Another perfectly placed pass, this time by Robinson on a power play, set up third-year forward Emmett Serensits for a one-timer which resulted in the Blues third goal of the game right before the second intermission.

Purboo scored an empty netter with a minute left, securing their 4-1 win over the Mustangs.

Blues starting goaltender Jett Alexander was outstanding in the victory, tallying 46 total saves across the 60 minutes of action.

On Saturday (Oct. 7) the Blues are back at their home arena, where they will face the Windsor Lancers. Puck drop at Varsity Arena is set for 4:30 p.m. with tickets available online at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed online via oua.tv.
