The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 3-0 to the visiting Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon at Varsity Arena.
After opening their OUA regular season with an impressive home ice win over the Western Mustangs, the Blues looked to maintain their home ice advantage in a second game in less than 24 hours.
In the first period, both the Blues and Lancers were skating fast and moving the puck well, but it was Windsor who found an opening as Aaron Shaws scored an unassisted marker for the visitors just past the six minute mark.
As the teams continued to battle back-and-forth, U of T netminder Jett Alexander was stellar for the Blues making several sprawling saves, along with turning aside two Windsor breakaway opportunities making the effort look easy in front of the home crowd. Alexander would finish the night with 20 total saves through the 60 minutes played.
On the offensive end of the ice, the Blues saw chances for veteran forwards Cole Purboo, Owen Robinson and Billy Moskal, but Windsor goaltender Nathan Torchia was on top of his game steering aside Toronto's attempts.
With the scoring being slowed by both goalies, it wasn't until the third period that the Lancers were finally able to add to their lead with two goals in the opening eight minutes of the final frame and pull away from the Blues for good.Â
Splitting their opening weekend, Toronto's schedule picks right back up with a Wednesday, Oct. 11 road outing at Laurier followed by a skate back on home ice versus the TMU Bold on Thursday, Oct. 12. All Varsity Blues hockey games a streamed live via
