The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team earned a 6-3 win on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday (Oct. 11) at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
After opening their regular season 1-1, the Varsity Blues looked to get their first road win against the Golden Hawks The Blues previously won an exhibition meeting with Laurier at Varsity Arena earlier this fall.
In the first period, after the Blues forced a turnover in the Laurier end, first-year forward Christian Stevens opened the scoring with a one-timer that found the back of the net.
Later in the period with the game now tied 1-1, the Blues converted on a power-play to regain the lead. The power-play marker was scored by third-year defence Emmett Serensits.
Shifting to the second period, the Golden Hawks responded with an early goal to once again draw even, but fourth-year captain for the Blues Cole Purboo made a nice move up close to notch his 23rd career goal to put Toronto back in the lead. However, with just seconds left in the period the Golden Hawks were once again able to tie the game, 3-3.
Back on the power-play in the final frame, third-year forward Owen Robinson found the back of the net to once again put U of T ahead by one. Later in the period, after the puck was deflected off a Laurier stick, second-year forward
Nicholas Wong added an insurance marker for the Blues on an impressive drive into the Laurier net. Then, with the clock winding down, first-year forward Julian Recine notched his first career OUA goal to secure the 6-3 win for the Blues.
In net, Toronto goaltender Jett Alexander recorded 29 saves in his second win of the season.
