The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 74-66 to the No. 7 nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic C
TORONTO STATS:Â Fourth-year guard Ellen Ougrinov recorded a team and season-high 20 points, while adding three rebounds and two assists.Â
Second-year forward Sabrina Nero recorded career-high 16 points, along with nine rebounds and three steals. Third-year guard Lauren Boers had 12 points, with rookie forward Saaya Malhotra notching her first career double-double of 11 points and 10 boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â The Blues and Gryphons started the game at even strength, deadlocked at 17-17 after the first quarter. The Gryphons took the lead of 35-26 at the halfway point lead. Although the Blues opened the third quarter with a dominant run, they trailed for the remainder of the quarter with the Gryphons coming out on top, 54-39. While the Blues offence made tremendous effort in the final quarter, led by Ougrinov and Nero, they were unable to complete the comeback.
UP NEXT:Â The Varsity Blues return to the court next Friday, January 13 to face off against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Lakehead Athletic Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00pm.Â
