After a back-and-forth game, the Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 78-71 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday night (Jan. 13) at the Lakehead Athletic Centre.
With the loss, the Blues hold a 3-10 record and sit in fifth place in the OUA Central division.
TORONTO STATS: Third-year guard Lauren Boers led the Blues with a career-high 24 points, while adding five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Fourth-year guard Ellen Ougrinov scored 14 points, along with 10 rebounds and four assists, grabbing her first double-double of the season. Second-year forward Sabrina Nero scored 16 points, in addition to four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues started the game off strong, immediately taking a 10-point lead, and would hold a 22-16 lead at the end of the first. In the second quarter, the Thunderwolves began to cut into the Blues lead and took a 40-37 lead at the halfway point.
The third quarter proved to be an intense game for the Blues and Thunderwolves defence, with the lead changing hands multiple times through the quarter. Ultimately, the Blues and Thunderwolves headed into the fourth quarter tied at 58-58. The home team surged ahead in the fourth, with the Blues ultimately falling 78-71.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to the court tomorrow (Jan. 14) for a rematch with the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
