The University of Toronto Varsity Blues Women's Basketball team downed the Lakehead Thunderwolves 89- 66 on Saturday (Jan. 20) night at the Lakehead Athletic Centre. Improving their record to 4-10 on the season.
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year guard Ellen Ougrinov led the Blues team with a career-high 28 points including three rebounds, six assists, and one steal.
Third-year guard Lauren Boers scored 14 points, along with three rebounds and one assist. Second-year forward Jada Poon Tip recorded 11 points coming off the bench in addition to three rebounds and two assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After falling to the Thunderwolves the previous night, the Blues came out ready to play taking the first quarter 27-20. While the Thunderwolves defence was strong in the second quarter, the Blues offence were able to maintain their lead 46-42 by the halfway point. The Blues were able to shine in the third quarter and extended their lead to 17 points (73-56). In the fourth quarter, the Blues offence was able to remain in the lead with the help of Ougrinov's 100% free throw rate, Boers, and Poon Tip to take the game 89-66.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to the court on Friday, January 20
th to face off against the Carleton University Ravens at the Goldring Centre Kimel Family Filed House. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
