Third-year forward Anthony Daudu notched a career-high 21 points, while adding 13 boards in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team to a 99-85 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday (Jan. 7) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
With the win, the Blues improve to 10-2 and remain atop the OUA Central division.Â
TORONTO STATS:Â Daudu added two assists, one block and one steal to his double-double tally. Â
Third-year guard Iñaki Alvarez scored 17 points, along with one rebound and four steals, while first-year forward Ryan Rudnick and third-year guard Callum Baker followed with 14 points each. Rudnick contributed five rebounds, three assists, and two steals while Baker added three rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Veteran Somachi Agbapu added a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards in the win.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues began the game in the lead, finishing the first quarter 10 points ahead of the Gryphons, 27-17. Toronto continued to lead through the remainder of the first half and was up 52-40 at the midway point of the game. The offence increased their presence on the court, extending U of T's lead to 78-64 in the third quarter. With Daudu and Alvarez's dominance, they were able to lead the Blues to closing out the game, 99-85.
UP NEXT:Â The Varsity Blues return to the court next Friday, January 13 as they travel to to face off against the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Lakehead Athletic Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00pm.Â
