The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 83-56 to the York Lions on Wednesday (Jan. 4) night at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
TORONTO STATS:Â Third-year forward Jessica Muha recorded a team-high 18 points, 11 rebounds and two steals.Â
Ellen Ougrinov scored 13 points, along with five rebounds and a steal, while Sabrina Nero had 10 points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â The Lions started the game strong taking an 11-3 lead early in the game, and holding a 25-12 lead at the end of the quarter. York opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to extend their lead. The Lions doubled their lead outscoring the Blues 25-12 and held a 50-24 lead at halftime.Â
The Blues put a strong fight in the third quarter with Muha scoring seven of the Blues points, but the Blues would still find themselves trailing 74-43. Defense was key for both teams in the final quarter, with the Blues outscoring York 13-9. Despite the strong quarter from the Blues, the Lions would win 83-56.Â
UP NEXT:Â The Varsity Blues return to the court on Saturday (Dec. 7) to face off against the Guelph Gryphons at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00pm.Â
