The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell to the Windsor Lancer 92-83 on Saturday (Jan. 28) night at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport.
The Blues now hold a 4-14 record on the season, remaining in fifth place in the OUA Central division.
TORONTO STATS: Second-year forward Jada Poon-Tip led the Blue from the bench tonight. The Toronto, Ont. native tallied 14 points and four rebounds.
Third-year guard Lauren Boers recorded 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Perhaps the most complete Blues performance was seen from second-year forward Sabrina Nero. Nero recorded seven points, seven rebounds, three assist, three blocks and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED: A strong defensive performance from both teams saw a slow opening to the first quarter. With three minutes remaining, Windsor had an 8-3 lead. However, seemingly motivated by a Blues time-out, the remaining minutes of the quarter saw both teams score double-digit points ending in a 21-17 Windsor lead.
Carrying that momentum into the second quarter, the Blues were able to narrow the Lancers lead to two by halfway through the quarter (26-24). The Lancer pulled ahead in the back half ending the quarter up 45-29.
Looking to protect their lead, the Lancer took a defensive approach to the third quarter holding the Blues to just nine points. The Lancer ended the quarter up 58-38 and would keep that pace into the fourth quarter.
In the end, the Lancer would see out the Blues finishing the game up 72-50.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to the court on Friday, February 3 to face off against the Brock Badgers at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
