BLUES COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT AGAINST LANCERS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell to the Windsor Lancers 85-78 on Saturday (Jan. 28) night at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport.

The Blues now hold a 12-6 record on the season, falling to third place in the OUA Central division.

TORONTO STATS: For the second-straight night, third-year standout Callum Baker led all players in points. The Oakville, Ont. native finished the night with 26 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists.

In addition to Baker, fellow guards Noah Ngamba and Inaki Alvarez also had standout performances. First-year Ngamba had 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while Alvarez, the third-year from Altafulla, Spa., totaled 12 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Coming off the bench, Aleer Aleer-Leek had 10-points in the loss..

HOW IT HAPPENED: Coming out fast and furious, the Lancers finished the first quarter up 28-12 and carried that momentum into the second. By the half, the Lancers had cemented themselves a 15-point lead, up 50-35.

Thanks to a strong offensive effort from Baker, the Blues battled back in the third quarter. Trading basket-for-basket, the Blues narrowed the Lancers lead to eleven, down just 69-58 at the whistle.

With crucial three-pointers by Alvarez and Aleer-Leek, the Blues continued to attack the Lancers lead and in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, were down by just two (80-78).

Despite their best efforts, the Blues fell short of completing the comeback falling 85-78 to the Lancers.

UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to the court on Friday, February 3 to face off against the Brock Badgers at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
