The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell to the Western Mustangs 61-60 on Friday (Jan. 27) night at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport.
The Blues now hold a 4-13 record on the season, remaining in fifth place in the OUA Central division.
TORONTO STATS: Third-year guard Lauren Boers led the Blues for the second consecutive game. The Milton, Ont. native tallied 14 points, five rebounds and a block.
Coming off the bench, third-year guard Thuraya Abdul-Hamid scored 13 points on the night, adding seven rebounds and two assists.
Veteran Ellen Ougrinov added 10 points, four assists and three rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After falling behind by a score of 13-3, the Blues offence battled through the first quarter to pull within three (19-16).
However, it wasn't until halfway through the second quarter that the Blues were able to pull ahead. Lauren Boers hit her first triple of the game to give the Blues a 21-18 lead.
After trading the lead a further two times, the Mustangs would end the second up 28-26.
The Blues chased the Mustangs throughout the third quarter, with the team from London, Ont. ultimately holding on to see out the Blues third quarter push (48-44).
The Blues third-quarter momentum would follow them well into the fourth. Breaking down the Mustangs lead basket-by-basket, Toronto was able to take the lead by way of Thuraya Abdul-Hamid midway through the fourth quarter (50-48).
Unfortunately in the final minute of play, Western would find their way back to down the Blues 61-60.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to the court on Saturday, January 28 to face off against the Windsor Lancer at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
