The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team downed the Western Mustangs 92-83 on Friday (Jan. 27) night at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport.
The Blues now hold a 12-5 record on the season, good for second place in the OUA Central division.
TORONTO STATS: Third-year standout Callum Baker led all players with 27 points. The Oakville, Ont. native went 7-17 from beyond the arc and had a career-high in assists (8) and rebounds (7).
Coming off the bench, rookie forward Ryan Rudnick had 16 points and seven rebounds.
Veterans Inaki Alvarez and Anthony Daudu rounded out the Blues scoring. Daudu recorded 12 points and seven rebounds, while Alvarez tallied 11 points and added seven assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues opened the first-quarter with an early 8-2 lead. Despite the Mustang crawling back within three points, the Blues finished the quarter ahead 19-16.
With a major offensive effort from Baker, the Blues battled through a back-and-fourth second quarter to remain in the lead (41-37). The Arts and Science major recorded nine points going 3-5 from beyond the arc and added two assists.
The third-quarter is where the Blues began to pull away. With Baker as their connector, the Blues intricate passing plays helped the Toronto-based team to a 74-56 lead by the end of the third.
The fourth quarter saw the Blues continue to dominate the Mustangs. Holding their lead throughout the fourth quarter, the Blues ultimately won the game 92-83.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to the court on Saturday, January 28 to face off against the Windsor Lancer at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
