WOMEN 2ND, MEN 4TH AT U OF T WINTER INVITATIONAL

Results

The Varsity Blues swimming teams wrapped up a busy weekend in the pool by hosting the U of T Winter Invitational on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 22) at Varsity Pool.

TEAM SCORES: The No. 2 nationally-ranked Blues women placed second overall with 343 points, behind the McMaster Marauders (385) and ahead of the Guelph Gryphons (339). Toronto's No. 3 nationally-ranked men finished fourth with 221 points, behind McMaster (395.5), Waterloo (384.5) and Guelph (242).

"This was a real test this weekend with four hard sessions in less than 48 hours but we needed it to prepare the athletes for the OUA and U SPORTS championships that have six sessions over three days," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "The athletes are pretty tired but we accomplished what we wanted. On to the real focus of the season—the upcoming championships in February!"

"We did not race everyone in the meet as we had already raced three times in just over 24 hours so the final team tally was not the goal, added MacDaonld. "Just getting in another race prep was fine. We also have eight swimmers that are heading to Europe for an international meet next week miss this meet entirely."

WOMEN: Haley Klenk led a 1-2-3-4-5-6 finish for U of T in the women's 50 freestyle. Klenk clocked a time of 2637 seconds, with Shannon Russell (26.58), Alcina Leung (26.60), Gemma Norman (26.63) Teagan McKenzie (26.70) and Katie Marovino (26.91) following behind her. Marovino also won the 100 freestyle in 57.75 seconds.

Similarly, the Blues finished 1-2-3-4 in the 50 backstroke. Lily Chubaty won the event in 29.06 seconds, followed by Klenk (29.19), Norman (29.72), and McKenzie (29.94).

Caroline Carruthers won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.59, while Chubaty was second in 1:03.62.

MEN: Brendan Oswald (26.37) and Liam Weaver (26.44) finished 1-2 in the men's 50 backstroke, while Weaver also won the 50 freestyle (22.70).

Carter Buck touched the wall first in the 200 backstroke (2:00.02), with team captain Graeme Aylward winning the 50 breaststroke in 28.54.

UP NEXT: The Blues now set their sights on defending their provincial titles as they head to London, Ont., for the 2023 OUA championships, February 9-11, hosted by the Western Mustangs.
