A last-minute penalty shot from Karly Hellstrom led the Varsity Blues women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Trent Excalibur at Varsity Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 17) afternoon.
The Blues now have a 3-0-1 record in their 2022 OUA campaign.
The Blues and Excalibur were held scoreless after one half of play with Blues goalie Maddy Nardin and Excalibur goalie Imogen Bellinger making crucial saves on each end.
Excalibur midfielder Molly Steele then opened the scoring in the 49
th minute.
The Blues would come storming back. In the 75
th minute, second-year forward Anne Yeomans would score to tie the game. Then with a chance to gain the lead, Hellstrom would convert on her penalty kick in the 90
th minute.
The Blues finished the game with 20 shots, eight of them on target. Yeomans lead the team with four shots on goal.
The Varsity Blues return to action Sunday, September 18 when they face-off against Ontario Tech at Varsity Stadium. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
