Both the Varsity Blues men's and women's tennis teams earned a silver medal Sunday afternoon at the Mayfair Club – East on the third and final day of the 2022 OUA championships.
After both teams earned their way to their respective gold medal games on Saturday, the men's and women's teams both suffered tightly contested 4-3 losses to the Western Mustangs.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues got off to a good start in the gold medal match, sweeping the Mustangs in doubles play. Using the teams of Winnie Choi and Pia Jhattu, Mia Wong and Rachel Berkowitz, and Andrea Kuntjoro and Janet Pham, the Blues went on to win 8-7 (10-8), 8-2 and 8-5.
Entering singles play with a 1-0 lead overall, Toronto ran into a tough roster of Mustangs. Although Choi and Amy Ji were able to win their respective singles matches 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (8) and 6-0, 2-6, 6-3, Western was able to win the other four singles contests to take the overall match 4-3.
The men's team, much like the women's, was also able to secure the single point in doubles competition. Despite losing the first of the three doubles matches, the teams of Eric Cherniyv and Alex
Luchak, and Kevin Wong and Michael Chu responded for the Blues, winning the next two matches to take two of three.
In singles, it was a battle until the very end. After Rassam Yazdi won his match for Toronto (7-5, 6-4), the Mustangs rattled of three straight wins, taking matches two through four. Keeping the Blues alive, Luchak won his second match of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. In the final match, it came down to the very end, with Western winning 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
In the post-event awards, the Blues certainly made their presence felt. Choi and Yazdi won the women's and men's OUA athlete of the year awards. Meanwhile, Choi and Jhattu were both named OUA all-stars on the women's side, while Luchak and Yazdi were named all-stars for the men.
